OUGD406 | STUDIO BRIEF 2 | RESEARCH

Here are some inspiring covers I found whilst researching existing book covers on Pinterest (I find this website is usually a good starting place when you're unsure where to take a brief as there's plenty of further links you can stumble across). These are all quite artistic and experimental. I'm a big fan of hand rendered elements when it comes to design so these all appeal to me a lot. Especially the hand rendered type, it looks a lot more personal and natural than using a font sometimes. Since this is going to be a screen print I have to make sure that I don't use multicoloured textures that could interfere with the brief restrictions. There must only be two colours used, which may limit me and the style of design I usually work with.

The shape of the figure on the 3rd image works really well and I find that something similar would work well with my book title, as it would personify it.

The crab design is one of my personal favourites. I love the way you can tell it is made with brush strokes and it looks as though it was done with black indian ink. The boldness against the orange looks super great, as it is though the orange is the colour that the crab should be.

The second image looks really effective, the use of shape highlights the details and the colour pops out well. I like how it looks like fabric however I wouldn't be able to achieve anything like this effect from screen printing.

Since my book is called "Obey the giant", I also thought of the brand OBEY and in particular Shepard Fairey's work:

Although they are impactful, they are quite vectorized and even though I want to challenge myself, they do not appeal to my style of working as much. I think that if I was to do something like this, it would not look like a book cover but more like a poster. I would like to try and capture the impact by my choice of type instead of the imagery, it would be hard to screen print a face accordingly whilst only using two colours.

OUGD406 | STUDIO BRIEF 2 | STUDY TASK 3

The words I got in the previous task where:

  • Confusing
  • Busy
  • Unnecessary
  • Saturated
  • Big
  • Urban
  • Relevant
  • Aggressive

I decided that the typeface I would choose for this task must reflect these words in a more positive way. The original design focuses more on the imagery, which is more relevant to the title and content of the book than typefaces, however by picking one that communicates these words, it will hopefully be successful.

But first I created two different sketches of where my text would be (a hierarchy of information):

I initially was going to choose Bebas as it's large, tall and in your face, much like advertisements. It also looks real nice and appealing. However we were limited with time to produce this piece so my next choice was Futura as I thought it was extremely relevant to the concept and the word "Obey" because of the brand; and the book is all about brands/corporations. However I went with a less bold variation as to not make it too similar.

The author and the tagline are above and underneath the main title as I wanted "giant" to really stand out and be the biggest part, for obvious reasons.

OUGD406 | STUDIO BRIEF 2 | STUDY TASK 2 | BOOK COVER ANALYSIS

To reiterate, the book I was given was Obey The Giant: Life in the Image World by Rick Poynor.

The next task was for us to analyse the actual book cover instead of the content and discover if the message is communicated successfully.

The cover for my book was designed by Kam Tang, an underrated illustrator who is 'naturally shy of publicity, his creative output is poetic, contemplative and can best be typified by his meticulous attention to detail'. This is evident in this cover too as it is full of colour and detail, so many tiny details are apparent in this design, things seem to be going on in every direction.

The cover is filled with brands and different corporations which may be a reflection of our consumer culture and how we are constantly bombarded with advertisements in the media. I feel like this is relevant to what Poynor is getting at in these essays, although I have not read the entire book, the publication's main aim is all about exploring the way the media use imagery in advertisements.

The way that the semiotics are placed within the cover show how powerful the mass corporations are and conveys the way we cannot escape from it and it's enormity. Since it is covering almost all of the page, it demonstrates that point well since there's not room for much else, similar to our society that feeds off of consumerism and relies on huge corporations.

Although I think the concept is successful, I don't particularly like the cover or the way it's been designed. I'm not a big fan of lots of colour myself, but I don't feel like these work. I think they would look better more realistic and not so vectorised in context with the book since it has some serious themes in it.

After we had analysed the cover, we were split into groups to discuss them further and each person must describe each book with one word. The words I got were:
  • Confusing
  • Busy
  • Unnecessary
  • Saturated
  • Big
  • Urban
  • Relevant
  • Agressive
I think although some of these words could be a positive in relation to the book, they are mostly all accurate in describing it's cover design. I think this study task has got me thinking how I can complete brief 2.

OUGD406 | STUDIO BRIEF 2 | STUDY TASK 1 | BOOK ANALYSIS

Book given: Obey The Giant: Life in the Image World.
Author: Rick Poynor
Published: September 17, 2007
Publisher: Birkhäuser Architecture.

Upon researching the book I read the blurb which basically explained that  the book's purpose is to expose the reality of contemporary visual culture through design, photography, publishing, advertising and art. It is a collection of  interesting essays that challenge key issues and trends. Since more and more people are becoming aware of the coercive power of commercial culture, Obey the Giant demonstrates how designers both resist and collude with control of the image world.

The title is open to interpretation as the first page says, you could take it ironically - 'obey' the giant, or the imperative and literal meaning of obeying our society and giant corporations.

Who is the Theorist/Author/Editor/Publisher?

The author  and theorist is acclaimed design writer Rick Poynor, who is a writer on His other publications include; Design Without Boundaries, Designing Pornotopia, Typografica, No More Boundaries: Graphic Design and Postmodernism. A lot of his work is all about challenging and questioning design choices. His publications often surround cultural criticism and design history.

The publisher is Birkauser, and it is the 2nd edition.

What is the purpose/concept/context?

I feel like the purpose is to get the reader questioning ideologies regarding the image usage in our everyday lives, plastered all over advertisements and used by mega corporations. For example, a quote on the back of the book explains this well;

"A terrific book, essential. After you've read it you really can't look at the world in the same way... which is also one definition of art"
- Douglas Coupland

Essentially the book is heavily brand-based, as the title may insinuate. It is to expose the power that these corporations have and exercise through use of imagery, in other words, visual culture. It offers inspirational evidence of alternative ways of engaging with design, and it will appeal to any reader with a questioning interest in design, advertising, cultural studies, media studies, and the visual arts.

The context is educational and informative, aiming to offer critical insights into the changing dialogue between advertising and design. Other essays address the topics of visual journalism; brands as religion; the new solipsism; graphic memes; the pleasures of imperfect design; and the poverty of cool. The worldwide dominance of huge corporations is invariably expressed by visual means.

OUGD404 | STUDY TASK 3 | TYPESETTING

For this task, firstly we were reminded of the distinct conventions of modernist and postmodernist editoral layout design. We were informed that using justified paragraphs leads to unappealing 'rivers' caused by the altering of the tracking. The less-lazy way would be to flush the text left and alter the lines so that it corrects the rag to be a little more neat. We were taught about how to correct orphans and widows which we had previously touched on in previous sessions; which involved a similar process to adjusting the type in different lines.

After we had an overview on modernism, we were split into groups and given a poem - The Mouses' Tale and were told to create different layouts for both postmodernism and modernism.

For our modernism one there was discussion about whether the poem should be layed out as it would be read, for example following the conventions of poetry, or having the layout appealing and neat. I thought that since modernism is about legibility and making type easier to read, that the poem should be how it would be read with the same system, it still looks neat and follows the conventions. We used both however as we were unsure which would be correct, since one follows the right principles of modernism and the other looks more modernist.

For post modernism we decided to be experimental as that is exactly what postmodernism is; breaking rules. We added huge speech marks and created a mouses tale on the last line to 'cleverly' fit with the title of the poem.

This session allowed me to become more confident with layout of type and stop myself perhaps being lazy and justifying my text! I am a fan of postmodernism over modernist design, so it was fun to try out a layout and be experimental and work in a group and get different opinions and options.

OUGD406 | STUDIO BRIEF 1 | SECRET 7 | FINAL CRIT

For this crit we were put in pairs in order to both crit a person's work. We had to fill out sheets with questions about their work and how successful the design is. It was challenging to really go into depth on how well a person has communicated an idea and if it is the correct concept they were trying to convey, but it was useful in terms of improving ways to give ideas and general critiques to others. It was also great to get some feedback on my final design.

After reading Rhys and Amelia's comments it was really encouraging to hear that my message had been communicated successfully. My design was about the chaos of drugs and as mentioned above, it was great to hear they had both interpreted my design correctly. I think an improvement would be to create a good caption for the submission to Secret 7 so that it is communicated clearly.

OUGD404 | STUDY TASK 1 | BOOK DEFINITION

In our session we were asked to define what a book actually is, and it became apparent that a book can simply be anything with folds/pages that displays information or communicates a message to an audience. So, in theory a magazine, or a birthday card.

Each of us brought in books that made us think about the purpose, binding methods and stock choices, and our task was to analyse the books brought in.

This is a card I received from a friend for my birthday. The purpose is to communicate a message and either be kept for sentimental value or thrown away. The stock is just white card so it's cheap to produce and sell. It is simply folded in the middle so the binding is easy and cheap.

This is a sketchbook, the purpose is to write/draw/paint etc on the pages. The stock is thick in order to prevent inks or paints from leaking through the back. This will make the book more expensive than a thinner gsm but it is essential to have thicker stock for the purpose of the sketchbook. The binding method is ring bound so that the pages are easily removed and other pages can be brought to the back of the book, perhaps to ensure unwanted paint or other materials don't somehow get on it.

A magazine for creatives, it's purpose is to communicate a range of information. The magazine has quite thick stock, meaning it won't be too cheap but it will essentially look nicer, perhaps attracting the audience further with it's glossy finish. I believe this magazine's binding method was glue, perhaps cutting costs.

A book I brought in was a fiction novel by George R.R. Martin. The purpose is to narrate a story and entertain the reader. It's quite a thick book so the stock is quite thin to cut costs on mass production. The cover is a little thicker to protect the inside of the book but it's still not extremely thick as a hard back book would be. The binding method is done by glue, also so it isn't too expensive to produce.

The purpose of the Kindle is to be a convenient source for reading a collection of books at the tip of your fingers. There is no need for any stock as it is all viewed digitally, the same going for the binding.

OUGD406 | STUDIO BRIEF 1 | SECRET 7 | IDEA DEVELOPMENT & EXPERIMENTATION

After doing some further research and drawing up rough thumbnails, the next step was to be experimental on Photoshop. Since I had created a lot of scans of paint splatters and illustrations, I started with those as they capture the nature of the song well.

I created this using the two scans above, and messing with selective colour and the contrast. The blue and the yellow reflect the actual music video as they were the main colours used in it. The paint in the second scan I used a sponge on and then bleached it to achieve different tones of colour.

Again sticking with the same colour theme, I combined some of the illustrations I scanned in with a photoshop brush. I'm unsure how successful this design is, in a sense the 'tension headache' text works well as there is a lot going on in the song, also it's a lyric from the song that I thought sounded interesting. The reason I put a square there is because there is one used on the music video so I thought I would consistently experiment with similar themes.

I experimented with the same scan on this design and changed the colours more drastically. I like the last one the most as it looks thermal. The primary colours along with the green work well against the really bold black. The drippy effect that I created by drawing, is supposed to reflect the actual title of the song without being too obvious. I'm unsure if this actually looks like a vinyl, or would work for the song, it looks too lighthearted and 'fun' when Born Slippy isn't a very cheery song.

As for this design, it was very experimental and kind of happened on it's own organically. I think it successfully appears to capture the effects of drugs because of the veins that I edited to make clearer, and the position of my pupil. I experimented with duo tone for this and I personally liked the pink and blue together, they really stand out. I wanted to more subtly add a different colour so I used one of my paint scans to make a Photoshop brush which acted as the yellow veins/dribbles. Overall it's a little bit spontaneous and not as thought out as my other designs but sometimes I feel these are the most fun to produce. It would have been good to produce similar versions in different colours to compare them.

Since Born Slippy .NUXX is used on the film Trainspotting I thought it would be interesting to use themes influenced by it. Even though I worry this may have been a route other designers took with the competition, I thought I would have a go at it anyway as it's all about trying to make your design stand out amongst the others.

Referring back to my thumbnails I produced a continuous line drawing of a spoon and a syringe, semantically conveying heroin/drugs/addiction. The line drawing looks messy, imbalanced and has flaws which is what I was aiming for. Having an addiction is never an easy thing, so a perfect drawing would not reflect what I wanted to communicate. The different bumps in the drawing suggest the ups and downs of dabbling in drugs.

Although the singer of Underworld was singing about his addiction to alcohol, I still thought this worked as the song could portray addiction most substances. The use of heroin in my design was a stronger message than alcohol, I felt.

I combined the drawing with more of my paint scans as I wanted to make the best use of them and they work well with the designs I am producing. I liked how subtle it looked on this first design. The blackness acts as the 'darkness' a person may face whilst battling with themselves, and the isolation they may feel.

I like how the red on the end of the needle connotes blood and the colours change on the way down the drawing, but only show up on the white and not the black.

For these designs I first tried it in white. I knew I wanted to design something which appeared as though it was 'splitting', so I used paint and messed around with the hues to create multiple tones and colours. I selected certain circles from the scan and pasted them next to my line drawing, using blending modes. It was so easy to mess around and create different combinations. The black looks so much better than the white as the colours are more vivid. Towards the last designs I resized the circles so there was a more even focus on both features. To finish off, I inverted a scan of slightly crumpled paper and put it in the background to add more texture instead of it looking too flat.

The whole concept of this design is to show the effects of drugs, the last design is my personal favourite as, because of the primary colours, it looks thermal, representing the human body and temperature. The splitting represents how your life can be torn apart by the use of drugs, and I feel this is my most successful design, conceptually and aesthetically.

Another idea I had was to play on the term "born" in the song's title, and the first thing that came to my mind was literally birth. I took this photo of me in the womb and edited it in photoshop.

Here it looks cleaner and stands out more. I took off my information as I didn't want that to be on a vinyl for everyone to see. I thought I would experiment more with colour and try and play on the 'slippy' part of the song title too.

These were all quite experimental, I tried changing the colour using duotone and also adding lines that were messy and careless. These experiments however didn't seem strong, my favourite is the last one, the mauve colour works really well with the greys, even though it isn't as clear.

These two are my favourite. Since cyan and red are my favourite colours to use I naturally find the anaglyph effect really appealing. This effect enables the pieces to look blurry and also reflect movement which can refer back to the term 'slippy'. Both versions I think have pros and cons, the black is more traditional but the colours stand out a lot more whereas the white/grey has a more interesting slant, but the shapes and colours do not stand out as well as the other, it looks a little more messy. I asked people in the class which they preferred:

It was interesting to find out that people liked the way the white one goes against traditional scan pictures.

Sticking to the same type of theme I created this by using a lyric that is heavily repeated in the song 'boy'. I like the colours that I've used here however I don't think this would be effective as a vinyl cover because the word looks as though it is the title of the song.

For these ideas I went back to the heroin/drug route but decided I wanted to use photography for this, in order to achieve a more realistic end result. My mum works in a hospital, and so I managed to acquire a syringe (without the needle) to take a picture of, however since it lacked the crucial needle part, I whipped out some craft skills and stuck a sewing needle in it. I added fairy liquid into the container as I wanted to be able to edit the colour to my preference during the design process:

I tried out the anaglyph effect again as I really like how it looks for this brief. I duplicated the layers with the syringe and edited the levels, then tilted them slightly so the needle stays in the same point.
The first two are my favourites as blue and yellow remind me of the music video and seem to work together pretty well.

The one with all the primary colours for me looks a little too busy and doesn't really work as well as the two coloured ones. They're a lot more subtle.

I think I have managed to create a lot of ideas that I can take forward and tweak for the interim crit.
