OUGD503 / STUDIO BRIEF 01 / SECRET 7 / CONCEPT & SONG CHOICE

The first step to approaching the brief was to listen to each of the tracks and gain a feel for the sound and the type of imagery that is conjured mentally whilst hearing the lyrics/instruments. After doing this, I felt that Max Richter's song Dream 3 really stood out to me, it was especially prominent because of the absence of lyrics. It is a 10 minute instrumental which features calm piano and violin, which can be interpreted as peaceful, or even sorrowful. For me, a couple of concepts came to mind.

The first was the simple act of sleeping. The dreamy instrumental really captures the essence of having a deep slumber, the body shutting down and the mind being put to rest. To emulate this visualisation there would have to be thought put into what mediums to use, and if a hand rendered approach would be more appropriate.

Another concept I came up with whilst listening to the track was death itself, which is also another way of describing being asleep - permanent sleep. In order to encapsulate this concept I would have to consider imagery that accurately conveys the act of death whilst also remaining impactful and appropriate for a record sleeve, and remaining suitable for the track.

Finally the concept chosen to take forward was 'death', as that seemed the most inevitable and interesting choice which I feel really relates to the track Dream 3.
