OUGD405 | STUDIO BREIF 3 - LAYOUT | RESEARCH

For studio brief 3 we must use our previous research and data from brief 2 and lay it out into a booklet. It must have a minimum of 5 double spread pages. The booklet must also be created on In Design.

Since I had already practiced layout for my slides, I decided I wanted to stick to the same type of theme, using the red/black/grey and white tones and use of photography of trees. I like the colour scheme, especially using red because it connotes danger and also conveys the look of blood. I also want to experiment further with half tone as I think it gave my images a texture and was also relevant to news, which murderers will have been featured in.

The font i'm thinking of using, at least for the titles and display text, is Retro Sans as it reflects the type used on a mugshot, and it's very legible and bold, grabbing attention easily.

I began by going online and looking up some existing booklets to see their layout and colour schemes.

I really like this booklet because it's a similar colour scheme to mine, I really like how well black and red work together. The laser cutting looks amazing and is something I'd be interested in doing in the future if not in this brief. I'm unsure where it would be relevant.

I like this layout because of the way the columns are set out in the last page, with the cyan accents, it really pops out of the page and makes it look more attractive. The colour scheme is very appealing, especially the duo tone image. I also like how spontaneous the cover is.

Both of these layouts look excellent, they highlight how important a strong colour palette is. I like the collage feel to the pink one, it works really well. However I prefer the bold blacks in the first one and how much they stand out and compliment the blues.

Using images to take up entire pages is really effective, and I'm particularly fond of black and white images too, which is why I love this booklet layout. Even though it has no text in it, I think it still works, although for my booklet I definitely need text.

Full black pages are something I want to include in my own work. I love how it looks here with simple white type. The images all being in black and white also look really effective and stand out. After seeing this booklet I'm unsure if I want to have a lot of reds in my own work as I don't want it to look 'too much' and over bearing to the audience. I think the whites and blacks/greys look good on their own, maybe with a small amount of red added in to make it more vivid.
