OUGD405 | STUDIO BRIEF 3 | DEVELOPMENT & EXPERIMENTATION | CONTENT

Next is the contents page.

Here I thought another image would set the scene well. Because I hadn't used an image covering the front page, I thought now would be the best opportunity to do that since I like the way it looks so much. My booklet is going to have a lot of black and white, so I thought I'd include a bit of colour to this page. I made these two images of Dahmer on photoshop first, just adding a new filled layer and using multiply/darken. I was going to have the colours black/red/white but now after experimenting I think the cyan looks much nicer and brings out the shades of black better.

I thought of doing some 'dark' textures to make the blank pages more interesting to look at. I created this by simply drawing lines in pencil on black paper, editing it on photoshop and adding it on indesign.

I then also made an image of Dahmer on photoshop as a large image for the opposite page.

I tried it with red and cyan but I thought the cyan one just looked a lot better. The red lines were a nice experiment but it looked too much.

I then added it to this page and added a quote by JD.

I switched the layout around and added the content:

I thought Nexa Light looked better as the body copy type too, rather than a serif; Didot.

I experimented with minimal layout, using only white, however the harsh black full page looks so much better and distinguishes where the different pages are. I stuck with Didot for this text, so the pages don't all look the same. The purpose of the brief is to experiment with different types of layout.

This page was pretty straight forward. I messed with the alignment of the subtitles but thought I'd stick with the vertical layout like the other pages. I kept this one very white and minimal.

This page is one of my favourites. I tried it in red:

It certainly looked more sinister, but very similar to what I did for studio brief 2. I want to develop what I did further and I think making the image blue was a good choice, and matched my booklet a lot more.

I added the question to give it some context.

I edited a picture of Jeffrey Dahmer but I wanted to incorporate the 20 words from my previous research. I think the second one is subtle, which is what I wanted to achieve rather than just a big list of words like I did on my presentation.

I came up with this page showing a quote of his alongside the words/image. I liked the grey version better as it complimented the photo and I already have a lot of black in my work.

For my last double spread I thought I could write about his death - how he was killed in prison by a fellow inmate. Since I don't have all the time in the world left for this brief, and as much as I'd love to sit and carefully draw a portrait, I just can't manage within the time frame. I took some tracing paper and roughly traced the outline of his face. I added the details myself, and I wanted it to look very messy and even have a 'traced' effect. I didn't really like using the tracing method as I felt I would have enjoyed actually drawing him myself from scratch, but I do think it looks cool this way too!

I then added it to photoshop and added the 'tears', tying in with the same theme I have with collage covering the eyes.

I tried various alternatives however I like the first cyan one I did, and the black bars (as they convey prison bars).

As for the back page, I'd made two experimental images:

I literally produced these because it was fun. I love messing with eyes, and distorting them, so this is kind of the focus for these images. I chose the first one for the back cover as I felt like it would just look really nice as you close the booklet.
