OUGD405 | STUDIO BRIEF 3 | DEVELOPMENT & EXPERIMENTATION | COVER

The first place to start is the front cover. It was suggested in my crit to narrow it down to featuring one serial killer, I thought I'd go along with this idea as I'd be able to have a lot more focus and depth.

I wanted to choose Charles Manson as I have a really big interest in him and his thoughts/ideas, he's absolutely mental, however he hasn't ever personally killed someone, but been the leader of a cult who did the acts for him. Eventually I chose Jeffrey Dahmer. I don't have a specific reason; although I wanted someone very well known and who had a name, for e.g Dahmer is known as the Milwaukee Cannibal. I thought this would be great as a tagline on the cover.

I wanted a large black and white image, here are some screenshots of my experiments with the layout:

Here I've used an image to take up the entirety of the page, which was my initial plan. I like how it looks, and I've used Nexa Light for the type in capitals to stand out. It's quite a geometric and attractive font. I'm not quite sure why I added a line from Dahmer's eye on the first one, I thought it looked quite omnious.

I don't like how the tagline is a bit illegible on the second image, that wouldn't work very well; especially on a cover page.

I experimented further with the layout:

The first I included the 'tear line' as I had in the previous image. I thought it didn't look as effective as the full image cover, as the line looked a little odd in the white space. It isn't in the dead centre either which just makes it look even more silly. I like the white space on these ideas to a certain degree however I think there might be too much, it could look too minimal, especially with the image only covering the very top.

I added a hint of red and also moved Jeffrey down a little:

Although I do like this, it doesn't really stand out as a front cover. The red line doesn't really have any significance either other than injecting a little bit of colour.

This one was my favourite of my initial ideas, I like how it's centered and theres just a nice thick white outline around the image. The font is still Nexa Light in caps, which I think looks really nice within the image. I wanted to further experiment with different placements of the title, however.

Here I added a tagline in white, it stands out better on the black of the shirt. The way I set out the text is supposed to look a little 'juttery' and not neat. I think it looks more appealing like this than just centred.

I did my previous brief in Retro Sans, but I'm unsure if it works for this layout. I think Nexa works a little better, looks a bit more sophisticated and even though Retro Sans is more relevant to the subject (as it does look like mugshot text), it just doesn't work as well!

I tried it centred in this type which also improved it, but I'd still prefer not to use this font.

This is the final cover I think is the most suitable and visually pleasing:

Similar to the other, I changed the sizes of his name and added the tagline in black at the top which I think looks nice and minimal.
