Editorial design is undoubtably one of my favourites, so upon getting this brief I was very optimistic that I could throw myself into it and produce something that I was not only proud of, but that fulfilled the brief.
Unlike the other previous briefs in the module, this was extended, meaning we had more time to complete the brief but which also involved more diligent time management and more work overall. Although challenging, I managed to plan my time efficiently, ensuring that production was completed before the final deadline for the brief. Planning your time is very beneficial for a longer time as it is easy to put things off and let it build up, making it much more unmanageable. I knew that organisation was a key aspect to this and so I put a lot of focus into this.
Using my own imagery throughout the brief was something that kept it engaging to me. The photos I used reflected a really interesting trip to Poland and represent places I have personally been to and experienced, making the content special and personal. I feel as though the overall look of them was consistent and relevant throughout the publication.
There was a number of considerations for this brief; the size of the publication, stock, binding method, layout, grid systems and print finishes. It is vital as part of the design process to think about all these elements and research is a vital part. I feel that during the brief I opened myself up to different methods of binding and found it refreshing to work with a larger document as I usually limit myself to smaller sizes such as A5 especially when working on a publication. I feel as though I made an informed decision regarding binding however it would have been refreshing to attempt a more challenging bind, but could have resulted in an unattractive resolution. Regarding stock and layout, which showcases type in Poland fittingly.
During this brief I also further developed into a more contemporary style than I had at level 4. I wanted to be able to design without the need for analogue materials to broaden my skills, and even though using ink and paint is one of my main go-to mediums, for this brief I recognised that it was unnecessary. I kept things minimal, something I have had difficulty with in the past. I created something I am quite proud of, and which is now my personal favourite piece of design I have done to date, which is a great achievement.
