Visiting the library was beneficial as we got to see what the space looks like already. From here we can start doing further research in order to come up with an appropriate concept.
We all did separate research online and looked at existing exhibitions.
We began to create different mind maps containing various concepts and directions we could take the brief.
Initially it was a difficult process to come up with ideas as every idea we came up with seemed to have a problem.
Eventually we discussed the idea of connecting the dots. As the majority of the pieces of design are about theory, we thought this was a suitable concept to start with as it relates to the idea of learning and understanding, since the exhibition is in a library, showcasing book covers.
From our previous research we liked the idea of featuring a geometric shape into all our designs. James tried out a selection of different shapes such as the flower of life, representing
Initial shapes we could potentially take forward. |
We felt this best represented our concept as it's connected by dots, it's geometric and clean looking. |
We debated on several variations for a name for our concept:
Re-connect, connect, connections, connects, connecting, links, joins, connect the dots, theorise.
We did agree on re-connect as it has a good sound to it. Since the pieces are redesigns of covers for books, this name suggests a 'refresh' or a start over from something previous which is essentially what the exhibition is.
The next step was to decide on who would design what for the brief:
Invites - Dan
Posters - Lo
Flyers - James,
Signage - Becky,
Booklet - Dan,
Labels/plaques - Becky,
Exhibition website - Lo,
Bookmarks/post card - James
The next stage is to create some experiments of our own that we can then discuss and develop further as a group.
