OUGD406 | STUDIO BRIEF 4 | REFLECTIVE PRACTICE | RESEARCH - ZINES

Since I will be creating a zine for this brief, I decided to firstly reflect on a personal project that I created with Charlotte which is our feminist Zine that we had printed and sold recently.

Since I was a large part of creating the zine, it is in a style that I would like to revisit and bring into the zine I will be making for this brief. I think that since this zine is personal to me and my own experience, I'd like to create it in my own specific style and not stray away from this too much.

The front and back of the zine. The motive behind the quite controversial name is that we took a 'derogatory' term related to females and pretty much allowed it to sound powerful. Some people may find this name offensive but in general, those people are clearly not the audience we were aiming this at.

Bright shapes such as the ones I used on this page featuring Cameron's work is something I'd like to bring into this brief also. The red stands out so much against Cameron's black and white photography.

I then decided to look into existing zines that contain aspects of design I'd like to try out and include in my own work.

I love pretty much everything about this publication. The distorted photography creates some interesting shapes and textures, and I like how it fits the entire page. Really effective in black and white against the colour scheme of the whole zine. I think printing on brightly coloured stock is quite hit and miss but is something I could consider for this brief, in this case it really works. What I love most about this zine is the hand rendered text, something featured very frequently in my own designs. I won't be neglecting hand rendered elements for this brief as I feel like hand rendered elements are a big part of my style and I'd like the zine to sustain this.

Again, really like the use of hand rendered type. Has a great quality to it as it looks imperfect and done in a marker. I like the use of bright yellow. Although my work is usually quite dark it would be great to experiment with some fun bright colours for this brief. I want the zine to look approachable and using dark colours could perhaps look serious and uninviting. The two columns look neat aligned towards the right, giving the spread a lot of breathing space as the title takes up a lot of room.

This design is quite full on but I think this is a positive. The use of bright colours is something I am considering for my own design, and also the use of pattern/mark making. The circular shapes and lines in black stand out well agains tthe pastel pink and bright yellow, and fill the space between the text. I personally feel as though within my own work I tend not to leave a lot of space, I like things quite full and busy. The use of pastel colours with bright colours is also very effective and looks appealing.

This design is much less colourful than the ones I've previously looked at but I am very drawn to anything black and white. It is a zine of imagery alone which I feel looks very effective but I will be using text. I love the dark blacks against the white and the way the geometric shape is positioned. The book has a lot of central elements which looks very simple. Again this design has a lot of interesting textures which work well against the plainer layouts on different spreads. The moth also reminds me of a piece of artwork I once did.

These are designs by Franco Balan, a graphic artist. I love the collage feel to these designs. They're fun and crazy, even quite childish in a way, especially the second design. I like the use of pen along with 'cut out' shapes in so many colours. Again these pieces of work are quite mental, everything is exploding and it's very busy which is what I like about it.
