OUGD505 / STUDIO BRIEF 02 / AESTHETIC RESEARCH

I had not designed a menu prior to this brief, so I decided to look around and gain inspiration from already existing menus.

What I love about this is the way that real life images are paired with illustrations, and the use of colour is very complimentary. Although busy, the transparency of the illustrations creates a softer composition that is attractive to look at. The space is utilised well by type in the left corner, although the most unsuccessful part is the type in the right corner, as I feel it is unnecessary, and more illustrations could have worked better. The purpose of the menu looks like a market (due to the name) and the array of ingredients you'd find at a market also communicates this further.

Again, there is a beautiful quality to this menu heightened by the overlapping elements. They do not make it hard to read, however the inside of the menu is very text heavy which is something that can't be avoided with menus. The colours of blue and orange/red communicate a sailor vibe and I would say the context of the menu is a 'fancy' pub or fish restaurant.

I also wanted to experiment with greaseproof paper with designs on, such as Mcdonalds do with their cheese burgers. This would illiminate the need for extra packaging.

My favourite design I came across was this, again the overlapping of the elements gives it a fun and vibrant feel, and the illustrations look contemporary and attractive. I feel as though it could be simplified without all the text, and to simpler shapes however I will take this forward for my own aims and development to ensure the pattern is not over complicated.
