OUGD505 / STUDIO BRIEF 02 / SOCIAL MEDIA & THE RISE OF VEGANISM

The problem I have identified is the lack of an adequate, affordable fast food chain/franchise in the UK (and globally), which vegans and non-vegans can afford delicious, healthy food without the inclusion of animal products.

Through experience on social media such as twitter, I have noticed a rapid increase in vegan/vegetarians within the age range that I engage with on the site. There has been an increase in the awareness of detrimental environmental and ethical effects associated with the consumption of animal produce, which has been spread through communication on social media, videos containing facts and information, informative tweets and images are also shared within the community:

"In 2013 the UK meat-free food market hit £625m in sales, a figure forecasted to rise to £657m in 2014. Today, some 12% of the UK population identify as either vegan or vegetarian, and 20% of 16-25 year olds self-identify this way." source

That article was dated back to 2014, meaning the percentage of veggies & vegans will have risen even higher towards the present date, presenting an even larger demand for convenient vegan foods / establishments. More people are rejecting the ideology of carnism.
