Diving head first into our first brief after a long Summer break was very beneficial to me personally as it threw me straight back into the swing of things. Since this was a week long brief it was quite intensive and full on, especially since over Summer I didn’t do as much design as I had been doing in term time.
I’d not worked extensively with leaflets before so it was refreshing to have a brief especially for learning about folds and designing a leaflet. As I have previously said I am not a very hands on person when it comes to anything apart from drawing or painting. Folding paper sounds easy however I usually get something incorrect. It was pretty fun to learn about new folds and mock them up. I could have tried some more intricate folds during the experimentation stage, I feel.
Since this brief was all about the Design Process, it was interesting to reflect upon my own personal design process whilst I’m completing a brief; especially thinking about from the beginning of the process all the way to the end. I realised that the design process can sound simple by putting it into steps/stages, but in reality I know that it really isn’t that basic. You may make mistakes, you could change your idea, interchanging between the steps and possibly not everyone sticks to a set process.
For this brief, design wise, I tried to do something different to what I usually do however I decided this wasn’t the correct thing to do as it is about the design process, and going against my own personal design process didn’t make much sense. In the end I designed something I felt comfortable with, using a hand rendered approach similar to what I have previously designed. Reflecting on this, even though this was more relevant to this brief, in second year I want to experiment with different approaches to design and not just the one I’m familiar with. This will be something to work on in the next brief.
This brief gave me a lot more experience with planning out a layout for print. I had to work out where to place certain elements to ensure it printed out as a correct accordion fold. Again, I don’t find it difficult to actually visualise what I want to create but going about it is another story as I find it hard when it comes to dimensions and working out how to actually go about producing it. This brief like I said gave me that extra experience and lead me to thinking more about production.
With a few mistakes made, overall I am pleased with how my leaflet turned out, and especially pleased with the page layouts I created. I would definitely try out an accordion fold without as many pages, that way I could experiment with different sizes instead of a really small pocket size leaflet. I also could have experimented with different stock choices however I felt a thick matte stock was the most appropriate and felt as though trying thinner, less durable stock would have been wasteful.
