OUGD504 / STUDIO BRIEF 01 / DEVELOPMENT 02

Since what I was designing before did not seem to be as effective in my personal opinion, I began to think of more ideas that could display my way of designing.

Last year I did a lot of hand rendered design, and since this is about a design process, I am aware that my personal process has a lot to do with this medium, and neglecting that aspect of my responses would not be right. I decided to scan in some paint strokes.

The paint strokes represent the way I design. The scan is full on, large and looks experimental. Sometimes in my designing process, things happen by mistake - which turn out to look fantastic and even have a contextual meaning. They also add texture instead of too much white space; something I use a lot in my personal work. I decided to use this personal style in my leaflet because although I want the content to remain general to all graphic designers, it is me who is designing it after all.

Throwing together the texture and some colour, I came up with a few different front covers:

I chose black, greys and yellow as my colour scheme as to me, yellow is an uplifting colour, communicating happiness and positivity. Furthermore, it adds a splash of vibrant colour amongst the monochrome tones. I used a black square to accentuate the shape of the actual leaflet and create a structure; I wanted it to look box like, with textures that are disorderly to indicate thinking outside the box.

A decision I faced was what typeface to use. Here I have tried out a modern, clean sans serif, alongside a bold traditional serif. During the crit, people favoured the serif as it is more mature and serious accompanied by the paint splashes and 'fun' colours. However I am keen not to make my leaflet seem too serious, rather a nice balance between that and lighthearted. I chose the typeface Bookmania in bold.

The second page into my leaflet would not be visible whilst the structure is standing, and I would rather have the first visible page entitled "brief", therefore I decided to create a page all about taking breaks to interject something a little playful. For example "watch danisnotonfire", some people may not have heard of this person, as it is a youtuber, however I feel like it makes the leaflet a little more personal as watching his videos is something I do on my breaks.

With this style now firmly in mind I went on to create the different pages for each section.

I kept the same paint texture to remain consistent throughout the leaflet. As it goes on, the yellow areas become larger, representing the outcome becoming clearer. In feedback, it was suggested that yellow could be a 'warning' colour however I disagree with this and feel as though yellow communicates positivity and happiness. To increase legibility I added a white background to the text boxes.

As for the back of the fold, I decided this would not be visable when it is stood up and it would be pointless to spend too much time on it. I felt a plain black background for the back would be simple and effective as there is a lot going on within the main pages.
