OUGD504 / STUDIO BRIEF 02 / DEVELOPMENT

I started by mocking up the square idea digitally. I tried to keep this as minimal as possible. I think they look appealing however they don't have strong contextual pragmatics. I tried outlining the text to make it look a little more interesting. I feel like the simple geometric square makes the logo appear stylish.

I then moved onto the circle idea. Again trying a clean, minimal approach. I tried various text placements and added strokes in places to add something else to it, also they correspond to the hyphen. I broke up the name with a hyphen in places as I felt it looked more aesthetically pleasing and wanted it to have layers to fill up the white space. I also wanted a contemporary style logo.

I thought green was an obvious choice, as it's used in pretty much every vegan brand identity ever, however I chose a vibrant neon green to make it stand out. This green looks fresh, striking and catches your eye. To see what other colours would compliment this shade out of curiosity, I tried a website called Coolors.

Although I wouldn't put purple with lime green I like how these colours look together. To me, they have an 'alien' vibe.

I also played on the definition of "Chonaic" which means 'to see' or 'saw'. I created variations of a very basic eye, keeping the same vibrant green colour. This logo reminds me of a popular dress I saw in stores a while back which had eye prints all over it.

I wanted to bring this eye logo into the word and keep the cooky looking eyelashes as I feel as though it looks 'hip' but maintains the context; the main aim of my response to the brief. I also did not want to discard the green so I tried to incorporate it in the pupils or the eyelashes themselves.

The client mentioned that they wanted simple shapes such as a square or circle so I tried the same idea boxed up, which I feel makes it more closed up instead of floating. I doubled up the rectangle to keep with a contemporary style, and I feel as though it works well. I tried breaking up the name Chonaic within this same idea and style, and added a square rather than a rectangle. I feel this also looks good as it fits with what the client requested.

I then put the text into a circle to see if this worked as effectively. I especially like the last one as it isn't as broken up and there's a nice amount of breathing space. It's good to be able to combine the eye and the simple shapes together.

The final idea came about whilst I was playing on the idea of the Vegan 'V' symbol.

I tried turning the V into a triangle, a notoriously 'hipster' shape, and flipped it. I added a green wavy line to inject some colour and further detail. Although I think this looks good, it was just experimentation with shape and isn't as contextually strong as my other ideas, also I would have to try and incorporate the name as the client suggested they definitely want text within their logo and for now this is just an icon.
