In class, we conducted the crit where everyone is free to walk around and answer questions regarding the brief on paper. I asked three questions and got a lot of replies which was extremely useful. I displayed my impact boards which will be submitted to D&AD.
What is the most effective part of the brand? Why?
"I feel like the logo is really strong and portrays the heart of the brand. It's simple nature makes it appealing to both men and women."
"Definitely the logo, its clean and self explanatory, and can easily be applied to literally anything"
"The application of the colour palette goes well with the neutrality of the products"
"The concept, and the way you describe it - good grounding for the overall brand"
"The colour consistently transitioning across all the packaging"
"The fact it works well presented on various mock ups shows its versatile"
"The strenth of concept and consistency of design treatment to underpin this.
"Logo and concept work really well."
What is the weakest? Why?
"The website feels like the weakest element because the top bar looks a bit too big in comparison to the other elements on the webpage. This is especially seen on the product page"
"Not a fan of the Zombie Boy images - makes the brand have a darker edge to it and may narrow down the audience because of this. Also unsure about the website - not sure of the relevance of telling people about the news"
"The website. I would maybe take the lines from your logo and position them around the web for example the top bar being a delicate outline rather than fill"
"Advertisement. Dont think it promotes skin care"
"The products page of the website"
"There needs to be a variation of people for the collateral. The photo currently used really change the appearance of the whole brand. it feels limited"
Although they are critiques, these feedbacks are exceptionally useful. I feel people may not have understood the news section of the website because they have not looked at the brief as indepth, but I can see where the weakest elements are to my branding now. With a budget and a time scale, I did not have time to locate people who would be suitable for my collateral, so Rick Genest was my favourite option, personally I see where people are coming from, but the dark edge to my branding is part of the overall aesthetic.
Is it successfully gender neutral? Why?
"Yes because it doesnt lean either way due to the monochrome aesthetic and the use of a sophisticated serif font which appeals to both genders and suggests power yet elegance at the same time. Love it!"
"Definitely gender neutral due to the clean logo and colour scheme"
"Works for both genders, perhaps some imagery of both males and females would help"
"It is definitely gender neutral but I'm unsure if it would stand out on a shelf"
"Feels like different people can take away different things from the campaign"
"Yes you cannot go wrong with black and white. Nice work!"
"Yes, although black and white could be an obvious choice"
"Certainly. One other strength is that your design doesn't neglect gender"
This feedback was excellent as I have obviously been successful in creating a gender neutral branding. There are things about the concept people may not understand as I was not there to explain, or like about my campaign, but I am pleased that the majority like what I have created! I'm personally pleased with the final outcome, so the next stage is to submit it.
