The collaboration section of this module was the one I was most apprehensive about. I do not work at my best in a group, which is an aspect I knew I needed to work on if I want to be successful. At some point, you need to learn to be able to work with another individual, as I I know it can lead to some fantastic work.
I chose to work with Jack, who is a likeminded individual also studying graphics. We share a similar design style and get on well. Since Jack already has a passion for UX/UI, I knew working with him would allow me to expand my skills. Entering this brief, I wanted to discover if this discipline was one I could specialise in in the future.
Me and Jack created a digital application by the name of Your Telegraph, a customisable news platform catered to those who know their own minds. This app was a brilliant response to the brief, as it aimed to attract a wide target audience of older fans alongside newer readers. It was in short a contemporary twist on a timeless news paper. By implementing the concept of filtering news to what the user finds interesting, alongside the option to customise every aspect of the application, this created a specialised platform that brings news reading into the user’s hands. Giving users the ultimate luxury of variety and choice, the app is an engaging way to socialise and interact with other users, by posting their own responses. This is how Your Telegraph integrated comments. It is a more structured way of expressing opinions and would filter out those who have nothing constructive to say. By adding this, we successfully created a way to combine old and new users.
Working with Jack for the most part was extremely enjoyable. He was a very encouraging partner who kept me in it to win it. I did not feel in my comfort zone at all whilst completing this brief, and as Jack knew exactly how to tackle the brief and took a lot of charge, this made it challenging for me to really get stuck in with it at first. Once we got the overall layout and concept of the design ticked off, this was when I began to develop my skills and become more confident. Without challenges, you cannot grow as a designer, so this brief has taught me that well. Jack was a brilliant partner who has a lot of ambition and drive, which always encourages me to do my best.
This area of the module was an important part of my design development as it also made me realise that perhaps UX/UI is not my particular area. I feel I do work better on more abstract work, and sometimes this area of design was a little too serious for me.
